HealthEx x Claude: Putting patients back in the center of their own story

One of the most meaningful parts of practicing medicine is seeing what happens when people truly understand their health & are in control of their care journey. Anxiety fades. Questions become sharper. Engagement becomes more collaborative. And patients leave feeling steadier, because they have clarity.

At the same time, our healthcare system doesn’t make that clarity easy. Medical information is spread across portals, provider systems, labs, and PDFs. Even highly capable people can find themselves piecing together details under stress - trying to remember which medication they tried years ago, or where a scan was done, or what a result actually means in context.

Clinicians feel it too. Modern medicine is astonishing in what it can do, and still deeply challenging for most people to navigate. Appointments are packed. New results and diagnoses carry emotional weight and complexity. Even when we do our best, there is typically not enough time to translate that complexity into clarity.

That gap is where momentum gets lost. Patients leave with partial understanding. Clinicians leave wishing they had more time. And the homework of healthcare gets pushed onto people after they walk out the door.


The idea that started HealthEx

Many of these challenges are why I founded HealthEx in 2022.

I believed, and still believe, that people deserve to be more than passive recipients of care. They deserve the ability to drive their health journeys, make informed decisions, and be able to take the next step in managing their health with confidence. These capabilities start with having access to our personal health histories, noted across copious and detailed health records from the many places we receive care, with the ability to access and share these records at the moments that matter. 

Over the last few years, our team at HealthEx has built toward this goal and created the modern stack for consumer-driven healthcare, across digital identity, real-time records access, and computable consent: Our unified, user-friendly flows make it easy for any individual to access & share their health records with a provider, health plan, digital health app or AI agent, in a consented and transparent manner. 

Our platform is built patient-first: We understand the sensitivity and responsibility with which health records should be managed. Privacy and patient control are not features, they are the foundation for all records access. HealthEx was also an early signer of the Centers for Medicaid and Medicare pledge to create a more patient-centric healthcare ecosystem, and we’re committed to delivering on this vision to patients and consumers.


Enabling AI grounded in your personal health history 

Our team is incredibly excited to launch the HealthEx integration to Claude, enabling Claude Pro and Max users to link their health records to Claude. Individuals can securely link their complete medical history from any provider to Claude and receive personalized health insights through natural language conversations, without their data being used for model training.

Patients gain comprehensive visibility into their health record, while leveraging AI to get personalized answers regarding their health. Individuals control access to their records and can turn off the connection at any time. 

As Amol Avasare, Anthropic’s product lead put it, HealthEx lets people bring their health records into a conversation with Claude and ask important questions in everyday language - what does this lab result mean, what should I bring up with my doctor, how has this number changed over time - and get answers grounded in their own health history. Privacy and control are built in so users decide what Claude can see and can turn off access whenever they choose.”


People use Claude as a thinking partner for all kinds of work: researching, planning, coding, writing, and more. Now, that can include health.

Examples that matter in real life:

  • Preparing for an appointment: pulling together relevant history, medications, and recent results so you walk in ready

  • Understanding results: translating clinical terms into plain language, with your own context in view

  • Connecting the dots: seeing how a new data fits alongside prior history, trends, and treatment changes

The point is not to replace clinicians. The point is to help people show up better prepared and more engaged, and to feel empowered to take the next step in their care journey.


Privacy is the foundation, not the fine print

Health data is deeply personal. If you can’t trust the system handling it, the rest does not matter. 

We designed the HealthEx Connector so that individuals stay in control:

  • You choose whether to connect your records. HealthEx pulls your complete history together across all your places of care, then lets you connect to Claude. 

  • You can revoke access at any time

  • For connected health conversations, model training is off

  • You decide what portion of your health record Claude can see, across modalities like labs, meds, clinical notes and other such categoriesWe’ve built the HealthEx MCP to retrieve and package the right information efficiently, so the experience is both useful, efficient, and disciplined. Not everything, all the time. Just what’s needed for the question at hand.

HealthEx also operates within strict privacy and security requirements under the federal frameworks that enable patient access and sharing. We do not sell patient data. Access is driven by an individual’s explicit permission.

We’re proud to be part of national efforts pushing the ecosystem toward patient-directed data access, including our involvement with the CARIN Alliance and our support for CMS’s push toward a more patient-centered healthcare ecosystem.


The road ahead

This launch is not an endpoint. It is a beginning. If we get this right, the future does not look like AI “doing healthcare.” It looks like people having fewer blind spots, fewer last-minute scrambles, and fewer moments of feeling like a visitor in their own story.

We built HealthEx to give patients agency. Partnering with @Anthropic and bringing that capability into Claude is one more step toward making that agency real, practical, and safe.
