About HealthEx

HealthEx is a healthcare interoperability company building the connective tissue between patients, their health records, and the AI-powered applications transforming how care is delivered. We believe that people should own their health data — and that the apps, agents, and clinicians they trust should be able to act on it seamlessly.

We’ve built industry-first integrations with Anthropic’s Claude, Microsoft Copilot, and Salesforce, and we work with leading payers and digital health applications to make unified health records accessible wherever care decisions happen. Our platform connects to national health information exchanges (TEFCA / QHINs), FHIR endpoints, and clinical document sources — and the engineering team builds every layer of that stack.

What You'll Do

As a Software Engineer at HealthEx, you’ll work across the stack to build, ship, and maintain the systems that securely connect patients to their health records and power AI agents with real clinical data. This is a high-velocity environment where you’ll ship code to production frequently and see the impact of your work immediately. You’ll be expected to contribute wherever the team needs you – features, infrastructure, testing, security, and on-call.

  • Build and ship product features. Write clean, well-tested code across our platform — from FHIR data retrieval pipelines and API endpoints to frontend experiences and SDK capabilities. You’ll own features end-to-end, from implementation through deployment.

  • Participate in rigorous code review. Every pull request gets reviewed, and you’ll both give and receive thorough feedback. Code review is how we maintain quality, share knowledge, and keep each other sharp — especially when working with sensitive health data.

  • Contribute to testing and quality. Write unit, integration, and end-to-end tests. Help maintain and improve our test infrastructure. Quality isn’t someone else’s job — it’s part of every engineer’s daily work.

  • Support security and on-call. Participate in on-call rotations and incident response. Contribute to security reviews and compliance efforts. When you work with patient health data, reliability and security are non-negotiable.

  • Communicate clearly and often. Write clear PR descriptions, technical documentation, and status updates. Speak up in standups, design discussions, and retrospectives. Strong verbal and written communication is essential at our pace.

  • Learn fast and stay curious. Pair with senior engineers, dig into unfamiliar systems, ask good questions, and grow your skills rapidly. The learning curve is steep — and that’s the point.

What You Bring

  • 1–3 years of professional software engineering experience. You’ve shipped code to production in a team environment and understand version control, CI/CD, and the basics of building reliable systems.

  • Strong coding fundamentals that are amplified by AI tooling. You have a solid understanding of data structures, algorithms and object-oriented programming concepts and can write clean, correct code on a whiteboard or in a live coding session — without AI assistance. You also know how to leverage modern AI tooling to efficiently prompt and generate code that is explainable and maintainable. You understand data structures, algorithms, and system design at a working level.

  • Proficiency in TypeScript and Node.js. Our platform is built on TypeScript/Node, and this is the language you’ll work in day-to-day. You should be comfortable with async patterns, type systems, and the Node/React ecosystems.

  • Understanding of modern application architectures. You should be comfortable working across the stack, with cloud services (AWS preferred), HTTP/FTP protocols, relational databases, and REST or GraphQL APIs.

  • Understanding of modern AI architectural concepts and primitives. Familiarity with LLM-based architectures such as RAG or embedding workflows. Experience with Python — especially in AI/ML contexts — is preferred.

  • High velocity and low ego. You move fast, take feedback well, and don’t wait to be told what to do. You’re willing to roll up your sleeves on testing, on-call, documentation, or whatever the team needs.

  • Clear communication skills. You write well, explain your thinking clearly, and can walk someone through your code or a technical decision without hand-waving through the details.

  • Healthcare experience is a plus, not a requirement. Familiarity with FHIR, HL7, EHR APIs, or HIPAA is great, but we’ll teach you what you need to know. What matters more is your ability to learn quickly in a new domain.

What Makes This Special

  • Category-defining partnerships. We are live with Anthropic’s Claude, Microsoft Copilot, and Salesforce — powering AI agents with real patient data in ways no one else has shipped. You’ll build the infrastructure that makes it all work.

  • Learn from an exceptional team. You’ll work alongside engineers with deep experience at high-growth startups and industry-leading tech companies. This is a tremendous opportunity to level up your skills in a hands-on environment where senior engineers invest in your growth — through pairing, code review, and real mentorship, not just Slack messages.

  • Meaningful scale in a small team. With a product team of ~5, every engineer’s work ships to production fast and has outsized impact. You won’t spend months waiting for your code to reach users.

  • The right moment in healthcare. TEFCA is rolling out, CMS interoperability mandates are tightening, and AI is finally making unified patient records actionable. HealthEx sits at the center of all three trends

  • An environment built for growth. We actively invest in our team’s ability to learn, experiment with AI productivity tools, and reimagine how their roles evolve. Your career trajectory here will look different — and better — than anywhere else.

Compensation & Benefits

  • Competitive base salary with opportunity to grow in parallel to the company’s own growth trajectory.

  • Equity stake at an early-stage company backed by General Catalyst.

  • Access to world-class AI/productivity models, tooling, and support to re-imagine design and build workflows

  • Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision coverage.

  • 401(k) and wellness benefits.

  • Flexible in-person+hybrid work environment with 1-2x weekly in the office. Bay Area based candidates strongly preferred. Company will support relocation.

  • Experienced immigration support for qualified, high-performing foreign workers

  • Mission-driven culture: your work directly enables patients to access and control their own health data.

HealthEx is proud to be an equal opportunity employer. We encourage applicants from all backgrounds to apply.
