Senior Software Engineer

About HealthEx

HealthEx is a healthcare interoperability company building the connective tissue between patients, their health records, and the AI-powered applications transforming how care is delivered. We believe that people should own their health data — and that the apps, agents, and clinicians they trust should be able to act on it seamlessly.

We’ve built industry-first integrations with Anthropic’s Claude, Microsoft Copilot, and Salesforce, and we work with leading payers and digital health applications to make unified health records accessible wherever care decisions happen. Our platform connects to national health information exchanges (TEFCA / QHINs), FHIR endpoints, and clinical document sources — and the engineering team builds every layer of that stack.

What You'll Do

As a Senior Software Engineer at HealthEx, you’ll own significant areas of our platform and take on the technical leadership that comes with a small, high-performing team. You’ll design and build systems that handle real patient health data at scale, make architectural decisions that compound over time, and set the bar for AI-based engineering tooling, code quality and individual velocity. You’ll also be expected to contribute wherever the team needs you – features, infrastructure, testing, security, and on-call.

  • Own and evolve critical systems. Take end-to-end ownership of major platform areas — data retrieval pipelines, API surfaces, MCP Server capabilities, identity and consent infrastructure, or SDK tooling. Design for reliability, performance, and maintainability.

  • Drive technical decisions. Evaluate tradeoffs, propose architectures, and make calls on build-vs-buy, technology selection, and system design. Communicate your reasoning clearly in design documents and discussions.

  • Set the quality bar through code review. Provide thorough, constructive code reviews that raise the whole team’s standard. Catch subtle bugs, security issues, and design problems before they ship. Model what good engineering looks like in a codebase that handles sensitive health data.

  • Ship at high velocity. Move fast without breaking things. Break down large projects into shippable increments, unblock yourself and others, and maintain a high throughput of quality work. At our stage, speed and quality aren’t in tension — they’re both expected.

  • Contribute to testing, security, and on-call. Write comprehensive tests, participate in security reviews and compliance efforts, and take ownership during on-call rotations. You don’t hand off reliability to someone else — you build it in.

  • Mentor and elevate teammates. Help junior engineers grow through pairing, thoughtful code review, and clear technical communication. Share context, explain decisions, and create an environment where everyone ships better code.

  • Communicate proactively. Write clear technical specs, RFC-style proposals, and PR descriptions. Surface risks and blockers early. Strong verbal and written communication is essential in a team that moves this fast.

What You Bring

  • 4–8 years of professional software engineering experience. You’ve built and operated production systems, dealt with real-world failure modes, and know what it takes to keep software running reliably over time.

  • Strong fundamentals independently demonstrated. You can write clean, correct, well-structured code and conduct rigorous code review without AI assistance. You have solid command of data structures, algorithms, system design, and debugging methodology. Our interview process will test this directly.

  • Deep proficiency in TypeScript and Node.js. Our platform is built on TypeScript/Node, and this will be your primary working language. You should have strong command of the type system, async patterns, module architecture, and the broader Node ecosystem. Experience with Python — especially in AI/ML contexts — is a valuable bonus. Strong experience with cloud infrastructure (AWS preferred), relational and document databases, API design (REST, GraphQL, or gRPC), and CI/CD pipelines.

  • Ownership mentality. You take responsibility for outcomes, not just tasks. When something breaks, you’re the person who digs in and fixes it — whether you wrote the code or not. You’re willing to roll up your sleeves on testing, security, on-call, and whatever else the team needs to succeed.

  • Excellent communication. You write clearly, explain complex technical concepts to both engineers and non-engineers, and can drive a design discussion to a crisp decision. You surface problems early and propose solutions, not just flags.

  • Experience with health data or EHR APIs is a plus, not a requirement.  Familiarity with FHIR, HL7, SMART-on-FHIR, HIPAA, or healthcare data workflows is great.  But what matters more is your ability to ramp quickly in a complex, regulate domain.

What Makes This Special

  • Category-defining partnerships. We are live with Anthropic’s Claude, Microsoft Copilot, and Salesforce — powering AI agents with real patient data in ways no one else has shipped. You’ll build the infrastructure that makes it all work.

  • Learn from an exceptional team. You’ll work alongside engineers with deep experience at high-growth startups and industry-leading tech companies. This is a tremendous opportunity to level up your skills in a hands-on environment where senior engineers invest in your growth — through pairing, code review, and real mentorship, not just Slack messages.

  • Meaningful scale in a small team. With a product team of ~5, every engineer’s work ships to production fast and has outsized impact. You won’t spend months waiting for your code to reach users.

  • The right moment in healthcare. TEFCA is rolling out, CMS interoperability mandates are tightening, and AI is finally making unified patient records actionable. HealthEx sits at the center of all three trends

  • An environment built for growth. We actively invest in our team’s ability to learn, experiment with AI productivity tools, and reimagine how their roles evolve. Your career trajectory here will look different — and better — than anywhere else.

Compensation & Benefits

  • Competitive base salary with opportunity to grow in parallel to the company’s own growth trajectory.

  • Equity stake at an early-stage company backed by General Catalyst.

  • Access to world-class AI/productivity models, tooling, and support to re-imagine design and build workflows

  • Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision coverage.
